There's something wonderful about picking up strawberries, fresh from the farm, and letting your child eat them on the way home.
Today was the first pick up for our CSA share through One Straw Farm. We love getting the interesting variety of organic, locally-grown produce. This week we got lots of greens and a pint of beautiful, red, delicious strawberries! Most of the typical June CSA fare was present - red and rainbow chard, red leaf lettuce, kale, green leaf lettuce, romaine lettuce. One newcomer for us was garlic scapes.
Garlic scapes, the swirly coverings of garlic seeds, are apparently loved by foodies all over the place. One fast google search uncovered tons of blog posts and recipes devoted to the strange greens. Our plan is to make a yummy garlic scape pesto, using olive oil, walnuts, and Parmesan cheese. We found a great recipe on the Eggs on Sunday blog, which coincidentally also inspired me to blog about our CSA share each week!
Sometimes we have a hard time using up all of our veggies, especially at this time of year when the season predominately brings us greens, greens and more greens! Our goal this time around is to make use of everything and not let anything go to waste!
Tonight, I made baked red chard with Parmesan cheese and brown butter. It was amazing.
After letting Bennet eat his fill of strawberries, we also decided to use the rest of the pint up by making fresh strawberry milkshakes!
Yes, they were as delicious as they look!
I can't wait to see all of the delicious meals we'll get to cook and eat this summer through our CSA share!

I agree - the red chard was delicious! I was surprised as I expected it to be like kale. I'll have to try the garlic pesto recipe you suggested. Keep the ideas coming!
